FRCPath Haematology Part 2: Transfusion Blood Provision: Special Requirements Other Chronically-Transfused Patients
  • Chronic transfusion may be required for MDS, PNH or other haematological malignancies.
  • 70% of patients do not form red cell alloantibodies, despite matching for only ABO/RhD.
  • Local policy should determine if extended matching for other Rh antigens and K are required.
  • Where possible, use blood <14 days old to enhance red cell survival.
