Basophilic stippling results from RNA remnants (aggregates of ribosomes) in the RBC.

Causes:

  • Indicative of dyserythropoiesis
  • Thalassaemias
  • Megaloblastic anaemia
  • Infections
  • Liver disease
  • Lead and other heavy metal poisoning
  • Unstable haemoglobin
  • Pyrimidine-5′-nucleotidase deficiency
