Microcytosis – cells smaller than 7-7.2µm

Causes:

  • Thalassaemia
  • HbE/HbC
  • Congenital sideroblastic anaemia
  • Iron deficiency
  • MDS, particularly if associated with acquired HbH disease
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Acquired sideroblastic anaemia
  • Heavy metal poisoning
