Stomatocytes are RBCs with a slit-like area of central pallor. They result from a decreased surface area to volume ratio in RBCs.

Causes:

  • Hereditary stomatocytosis
  • Southeast Asian ovalocytosis
  • Hereditary phytosterolaemia 
  • Liver disease
  • Hydroxyurea therapy
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
