Target cells have areas of increased staining resulting from redundant RBC membrane in relation to its cytoplasm (in vivo these are bell-shaped, but flatten on spreading).

Causes:

  • Liver disease
  • Obstructive jaundice
  • Thalassaemias
  • Haemoglobinopathies
  • Sideroblastic anaemia
  • Splenectomy
